The Institute's goal is to strengthen and focus Cornell's capabilities, interests, research and activities in the study of Africa at Cornell. It also seeks to build a faculty and student constituency that is knowledgeable about issues of African development. It does this through fostering teaching, research and outreach activities related to development in Africa.
IAD sponsors seminars, symposia and encourages the development of African related courses at Cornell. Additionally, it plays a facilitative and coordinating role as well as initiating new ideas in the study of Africa. As part of Cornell's contribution to the human resources needs of African countries, the Institute manages a tuition fellowship program that assists students from Africa to come to Cornell for graduate study. The central objective of IAD is to serve as a focal point for Cornell's initiative of strengthening the study of Africa at Cornell thereby enabling the University to play a role in the development of policies that contribute to the development of Africa.
